Whichever you choose, make sure to get them on sale (they go on sale like once a month or two) and pick up some of the crucial DLC's for the game you choose (the respective subreddits will tell you which DLC's you'd want to pick up). Compared to it, EU4 is too casual and counterintuitive, and doesnt teach you that much about politics and other historical processes. Both are great games, and I recommend both. EU4 gives me a better strategy fix (i can't really play games like Total War or Civ anymore because the complexity and agency of EU4 has ruined them for me), whereas CK2 is amazing for role playing. It is as close to "Game of Thrones Simulator" as we have in a game.and that's not counting the astoundingly amazing (and free) GoT mod for CK2.Īgain, I can't say which is better. The gameplay elements and resources are less abstract, and have to do with person-to-person relationships. You play as a single person and play as that person's direct lineage from as early as 768 769 (Charlemagne) to 1444 (the end of the last crusade, which is when EU4 starts) 1453, the date of the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire. It's a deep and amazing nation simulator that does a really great job rendering historical events and powers as gameplay elements, while still allowing for some wacky ahistorical hijinks.ĬK2 is a medieval dynasty simulator which focuses a bit more on Europe specifically (though by no means exclusively). It's like if you took Risk, gave it steroids, then gave that product steroids. As someone who has put hundreds of hours into both, there is no good answer to this and it depends on what kind of game you want.ĮU4 is a more traditional strategy game, lasting from the end of the medieval period to the end of the Napoleonic period. ask questions and/or talk about the grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV by Paradox Development Studio.
